Sept 19, Colombo: The National Movement for Social Justice (NMJS) emphasized that the government should immediately intervene in the adverse situations that have arisen in regard to public safety and protect the safety of people’s lives and the reputation of the police department.
At present, the brutal murders that are heard almost daily are alarming to the society, the NMSJ pointed out in a statement issued today.
The NMSJ said it has to be accepted that in regard to such crimes occurring in the presence of tens of thousands of people, the remedies which have been employed so far to suppress such crimes are no way satisfactory.
Also, according to the information that some officers of the Criminal Investigation Department, which has been assigned a leading responsibility for crime suppression, have become the assistants of the said criminals, it appears that the police department as well as the methods it uses to fight crime need to undergo a formal reorganization, the NMSJ said.
“We would like to draw the attention of the Minister of Public Security as well as the Police Commission and the Inspector General of Police to that responsibility. In order to successfully suppress the crimes in the country, the first step should be taken by the police.”
The National Movement for Social Justice expressed hope that the attention of the relevant officials will be directed towards taking immediate action to suppress crime as well as to take formal action against the corrupt police officers.
