May 25, Colombo: A group of parliamentarians have handed over a letter to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena asking him to take appropriate action against Member of Parliament Ali Sabri Raheem, who was caught smuggling gold and smart phones.

The group of MPs who submitted the letter to the Speaker say that MP Ali Sabri has misused parliamentary privileges.

MP Ali Sabri Raheem was taken into the custody by Sri Lanka Customs at Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday (24th) morning for trying to illegally bring a stock of gold and mobile phones worth Rs. 78 million into the country.

He was released after being fined Rs. 7.5 million and confiscating the contraband.
