May 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs Tuesday arrested Puttalam District Member of Parliament Ali Sabri Raheem at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) when he attempted to smuggle in a stock of gold and smart phone worth over Rs. 78 million.
MP Ali Sabri Raheem who has arrived at the BIA from Dubai this morning was taken into custody for being in possession of 3.39kg of gold jewelry and gold biscuits worth Rs. 74 million.
Upon further inspection of his luggage, which were brought in using VIP facilities at the airport, the officials of the Customs Revenue Monitoring Division have also found 91 smart mobile phones valued at Rs. 4.2 million.
Accordingly, the value of the total stock of illegal goods brought by MP Raheem into the country is Rs. 78.2 million, Customs Media Spokesman, Deputy Customs Director Mr. Sudatta Silva said.
The MP who was arrested at the airport, has been brought to the Colombo Customs Headquarters and further investigations have been started.
