* Special operation in Southern Province nabs 84 people

May 21, Colombo: Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Thalduwa said that 84 people, including two women, were arrested in a special operation conducted covering the Galle and Matara districts of Southern Province.

The Police Media Spokesman said that 19 people were arrested on suspicion.

Along with those suspects, various drugs, sharp weapons, locally manufactured firearms, live T-56 rounds, and army uniforms were taken into police custody.

According to the Spokesman, 650 police officers, 253 Special Task Force officers, 252 army officers and 95 navy officers participated in the operation covering Elpitiya, Galle and Matara districts.

The spokesperson said that 58 roadblocks, 24 motorcycle tours and 25 mobile tours were deployed to cover those three districts and 186 houses, 1,080 vehicles and 2,436 people were inspected.
