May 03, Colombo: Police in Belarus have started an investigation into the death of a 24-year-old Sri Lankan medical student who was found dead in his hostel room on April 30 while studying at Grodno State Medical University in Belarus.
The deceased has been identified as a student named Tishan Kularatne.
This student, who has been educated in a main boy’s school in Kandy, has enrolled in Grodno University in Belarus with the intention of becoming a doctor after passing the GCE Advanced Level in bio stream.
At the time of his death, the student had been studying in his fourth year at this university, and had succeeded in winning the awards for the most talented student during his first, second and third years of studies.
He has been very friendly with the students studying in the university by teaching them the missed lessons.
When the student’s mother made a telephone call to her son, he did not respond to the call and when continued calls went unanswered, his mother has called some of fellow students to inquire into his well-being.
It is reported that since he had not responded to telephone calls, several students had visited his hostel and gone to the deceased student Thishan Kularatne’s room to inquire about him and then discovered his dead body.
The police have reportedly started a comprehensive investigation into his death and it has been revealed in the preliminary investigations that the Sri Lankan medical student had used his mobile phone until around 11.00 pm on the 29th.
The Belarusian police are investigating whether the student committed suicide or died from another cause.
