Mar 18, Colombo: Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage Friday ordered the Director of Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Colombo to hand over the newborn who was left in the toilet of the Meenagaya train back to the parents.
The magistrate issued this order after taking into consideration the facts made by Mr. Lakshan Dias, the lawyer who appeared in court for the parents, that the young suspect couple will be married today after they are granted bail and they are ready to take custody of the child.
Accordingly, the couple was ordered to be released on two sureties of Rs.500,000 each.
The Magistrate further ordered the couple to appear before the Government Analyst’s Department on March 21 along with the child and provide blood samples for the relevant DNA test.
Filing a probation report before the Magistrate, the Probation officer said the couple has the ability and interest to take care of the child as well.
The Magistrate also ordered the Probation Officer to constantly supervise the child and fixed further inquiries for June 02.
The unmarried couple, both 25-years-old, left the days-old newborn in the Batticaloa-bound Meenagaya train at the central train station in Colombo on March 10th in the hope that the bay would be found and adopted by someone.
The police arrested the mother in Nayabedda area and the father of the baby was arrested by Koslanda Police in Miriyabedda area, the following say. They were remanded when they produced in Court.
