* Ministers should consult trade unions while taking decisions - PM

Mar 15, Colombo: Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena says the subject ministers should discuss with the trade unions of the respective institutions while taking decisions.

Speaking during a discussion held with Trade Union representatives at the Temple Trees on Tuesday (14th March), the Prime Minister said that if the heritage of an institution or an organization is deteriorating a little by little, if it is falling apart, those who are working in the organization and in the trade union movement will feel the pain.

“The ministers in charge of the subject should discuss with the trade unions of the respective institutions. Some institutions implement decisions and take actions without any discussion with the trade unions. It not only frustrates the employees but an act detrimental to the existence of the institution. Taking decisions without such discussion is a hindrance to the peaceful working environment in organizations,” he said.

Prime Minister Gunawardena said that due to the economic crisis, many problems have to be faced in obtaining loans. “We must evade this barrier first to move forward safeguarding both the organization and employees.”

The representatives of trade unions presented the problems of the respective institutions to the Prime Minister, and the Prime Minister mentioned that they would soon discuss the problems with the Ministers and officials of respective institutions.

State Minister Sisira Jayakody, former Ministers Gamini Lokuge, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, trade union members representing National Center for Podujana Pragathasheelee Trade Union, Petroleum Corporation, Port Branch, National Water supply and Drainage Board, Road Development Authority, LRDC Association, Sri Lanka Telecom, Insurance Corporation represented by Podujana Pragathsheelee Employees Union, Podujana Estate Employees Union, Podujana Teachers Union, Union of Podujana Local Government Employees, Federation of Public Service Trade Union, Union of Graduate Development Officers were among the participants at the occasion.
