Jan 27, Colombo: Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera says that they have taken advice on the legal measures that can be taken against the actions taken by the members of the Human Rights Commission regarding the power cuts during the GCE advanced Level examination period.
According to the Minister the authorities in the electricity sector have taken formal advice from the legal departments regarding the members of the Human Rights Commission for forcing to accept agreements to provide uninterrupted power supply during the examination period.
The Minister said in a tweet that he was informed that Human Rights Commission members have obtained two documents by threatening to imprison the Ministry officials who held talks with the Commission.
On a Twitter post, the Minister said Secretary to the Ministry of Power & Energy informed him that the officials who took part in the discussion with Human Rights Commission has informed that they had been pressurized to sign two documents that they did not agree to by two members of the Commission threatening with jail sentences.
The officials have already consulted legal opinions on the steps to be taken against the HRC members and have submitted in writing on the events that had taken place, and the related written materials have been filed by now, the Minister said.
Minister Wijesekera said he has informed the President, yesterday morning and will inform the Constitutional council in writing about the incident.
