* CPC will take legal action against PUCSL Chairman over remarks on crude oil quality - Power and Energy Minister

Sept 26, Colombo: Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera says the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) will take legal action against the chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) over the on the quality of Crude Oil.

According to a tweet issued by the Minister, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation will take legal action regarding a statement made by the PUCSL Chairman that the crude oil imported into Sri Lanka is of low quality.

The Minister further said the CPC has adequate stocks of diesel and furnace oil but the extended power cuts was requested by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) due to breakdown at Lakshapana hydropower plant in addition to the, insufficient funds at CEB for diesel and fuel oil and hydropower management.

The Minister said furnace oil and diesel fuel is used at a minimum to reduce the cost of power generation by CEB and furnace oil and diesel will be made available by CPC for power generation on the requirements of the CEB.

Meanwhile, remaining cargos from last year’s Coal Tender has been advanced to fulfill the immediate requirements of Norochcholai.

Accordingly, the advance payment for the first cargo was completed today, the Power and Energy Minister said. A Long Term Tender and A Spot Tender will be advertised this week for the full requirements, he added.

The request made by CEB to PUCSL detailing the reasons for extending the power cuts.
