* Police battle with robbers to recover hijacked petrol bowser

Sept 25, Colombo: After a great effort, Kandy police arrested two robbers who tried to hijack a fuel bowser early this morning after blocking the road and attacking the driver and his assistant and recovered the bowser.

The fuel bowser was transporting a stock of diesel worth Rs. 1.3 million needed for the transmission tower of a private telephone company installed in Hantana Kanda, Kandy from Colombo when the suspects blocked the road with a three wheeler and hijacked the bowser at around 2 am Sunday.

According to police sources, four robbers stopped a three-wheeler in the middle of the road and when the bowser stopped, attacked the driver and the assistant and robbed their money.

An officer of the private telephone company, who was traveling in a cab while showing the way to the Bowser, was also attacked and robbed of his money, Police said.

Acting on the information received by 119 emergency line regarding this incident, a police team from the emergency department of the Kandy headquarters police went to the scene within an hour of the incident and arrested two robbers on the spot.
