* Paddy Marketing Board buys over 570 MT of paddy crop from Vavuniya farmers

Sept 25, Colombo: The Paddy Marketing Board has purchased 571,961 kilograms of paddy harvest this year from the farmers of Vavuniya district and paddy purchases are still ongoing.

Vavuniya, Veppankulam, Park Road and Welipola warehouses of the Paddy Marketing Board have purchased the Yala Season paddy crop.

A kilogram of Samba paddy has been bought at 130 rupees, Nadu paddy at 120 rupees and Keeri samba paddy at 135 rupees. The amount given to the farmers for a bag for packing paddy is 60 rupees.

The estimated amount to be paid for the purchased paddy is 1,085,000 rupees, said Mr. W. M. N. R. Weerasekera, Northern Province Regional Manager of the Paddy Marketing Board. Part of it has been paid to the farmers and the rest of the money will be paid very soon, he said.
