Sept 25, Colombo: A team of Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake have arrested a Buddhist monk who was attempting to illegally bring goods worth Rs. 31.4 million yesterday evening at the Customs premises of the Katunayake airport arrival terminal.
Initial investigations had revealed that the 23-year-old monk lives in Tissamaharama area.
This monk had arrived at Katunayake Airport yesterday afternoon at 02.20 in the Oman Airline WY-373 flight from Muscat, Oman.
Upon inspection of his luggage, the Customs officials have found 218 mobile phones worth Rs. 9 million, 08 gold biscuits worth Rs. 19.5 million, 06 gold pieces worth Rs. 680,000, 02 large size necklaces worth Rs. 2.2 million and a laptop worth Rs. 60,000, and taken into custody.
Customs authorities had taken steps to confiscate the illegally brought goods and release the monk without imposing a fine.
