Fri, Sep 23, 2022, 12:14 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 23, Colombo: The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to import the herbicide glyphosate for agricultural purposes for six months.

Due to the policy decision taken by the government to ban/restrict the imports of glyphosate, all types of agricultural activities have been severely affected, a statement on the decisions taken at the cabinet meeting yesterday said.

As a result, there has been a decrease in agricultural products as well as an increase in the market prices of essential food items.

Taking into account the situation, it is recommended to provide the opportunity to use glyphosate for all agricultural activities according to the need so that agricultural activities can be carried out in a more effective way in the 2022/23 Maha season.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the President to take necessary steps to import the amount of glyphosate essential for agricultural activities for a period of six (06) months.
