Sept 21, Colombo: The Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the officials of the Ministry yesterday (20) to take steps to promptly send the urea fertilizer needed for the Maha season to Ampara, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu, Jaffna, Anuradhapura, and Monaragala districts, which have finished paddy cultivation in the Yala season.
Paddy cultivation for the Maha season in those districts is scheduled to start in the first two weeks of October. Therefore, the aim of the Ministry of Agriculture is to give the farmers the opportunity to easily buy urea fertilizers by providing them to the agricultural center promptly.
According to the request of the Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Amaraweera, to take steps to provide urea fertilizer in the Maha season at the same price as in the Yala season, President Ranil Wickramasinghe has arranged to provide a 50 kg bag of fertilizer for a price of 10,000 rupees in the Maha season as well.
Also, a 50-kg of urea fertilizer will be provided for 15,000 rupees for tea and maize crops.
In addition to urea fertilizers, the Minister of Agriculture has emphasized that all arrangements have already been made to provide muriate of potash or ‘bandi pohora’ for paddy cultivation this year.
