* Sri Lanka Navy arrests 8 Indian fishermen in Northern waters, seizes trawler

Sept 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 08 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu and seized their trawler for allegedly breaching the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and illegally fishing in Sri Lanka’s northern waters.

According to the Navy Media Unit, on the night of 19th September 2022 conducted a special operation conducted by the Northern Naval Command deployed a Fast Attack Craft to chase away a cluster of Indian trawlers poaching in the island’s waters off Kovilan Lighthouse, Kankesanthurai.

In this operation, the Navy seized an Indian trawler remaining in seas off Kankesanthurai with 08 Indian fishermen and their fishing gear.

The seized trawler together with the Indian fishermen was brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbor and they will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings, the Navy Media Unit said.

The Sri Lanka Navy has seized 25 Indian poaching trawlers and nabbed 189 Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka’s waters, during operations conducted so far this year and produced them to authorities for legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Navy said it continues to carry out regular operations to protect the country’s fishery resources and livelihood of the local fishing community.
