Sun, Oct 2, 2022, 09:09 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 02, Colombo: Secretary to the Ministry of Education Mr. Nihal Ranasinghe has stressed that schools should not collect money from students or parents for various events including children’s and teacher’s days except for the school fees approved for each school by the Ministries of Education and Provincial Education.

Emphasizing that a circular numbered 2015/5 has been issued to prohibit the informal collection of money in schools, the Secretary of Education also said that it is the responsibility of the principals to stop such money-spending activities as parents are struggling for their children’s education amid severe financial difficulties.

The Secretary also emphasized that it is the responsibility of the parents to inform the relevant authorities if a school asks for money unnecessarily from school students.

Education Secretary has made these disclosures in response to a query made by the Silumina Sunday newspaper regarding an incident where the principal of a school in Hatton Kotagala Bogahawatta area has beaten a female student of that school with a broom handle for not paying 300 rupees for holding a teacher appreciation ceremony.

Hatton Education District has already launched an investigation into the incident.

The Education Secretary pointed out that even school fees should not be demanded from children and parents pressuring them, and if a parent is unable to pay the amount, it is possible for them not to pay it by presenting a certificate from the Grama Niladhari.
