* Glyphosate ban to be lifted soon
Sun, Nov 20, 2022, 10:24 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 20, Colombo: The Ministry of Agriculture has decided to remove the ban on herbicide glyphosate, which had a major impact on weed control in all crops including paddy, maize, tea and rubber.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Gunadasa Samarasinghe said the relevant gazette was handed over to the government printing press with the signature of the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera for printing.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera decided to lift the glyphosate ban after making a number of inquiries from various sectors including farmer representatives, agricultural experts, and agronomists on whether to remove the ban.

For the first time, glyphosate was banned in Sri Lanka in 2015 without introducing any alternative measures for weed control. Subsequently, in 2018, the government banned the use of glyphosate in tea and rubber cultivations.

However, as inferior glyphosate illegally imported by sea are being sold in all parts of the country at high prices, further maintenance of the glyphosate ban has become futile.

Also, since there was no alternative method for weed control in the agricultural sector, that situation also led to a decrease in harvests.

The economic losses to the country due to the ban had been estimated to be about 15 to 20 billion rupees annually.

Accordingly, steps were taken to remove the glyphosate ban that had been in place for 07 years since 2015, said Mr. Gunadasa Samarasinghe, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.
