Nov 17, Colombo: Sri Lankan international cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka who was in remand custody on sexual assault charges has been granted bail by a Sydney court.
A bail application was submitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales on behalf of Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka, who has been remanded in custody in Australia.
The court had granted bail after it heard that he had the support of the Sri Lankan cricket association and government and he was released from prison on $150,000 bail.
The Magistrate granted bail with strict conditions that he report daily to police, observe a curfew between 9pm and 6am and hand over his passport.
His lawyers submitted a bail application to the Supreme Court of New South Wales after a Downing Centre Local Court rejected his bail application.
Gunathilaka had spent 11 nights in custody after he was refused bail in on November 7.
Gunathilaka has been charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent after allegedly sexually assaulting a 29-year-old woman he met on Tinder in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on November 2.
The 31-year-old cricketer was arrested in Sydney on November 06 while he was in Australia for the T20 World Cup 2020 cricket tournament.
The case will be taken up for hearing on 12 January 2023.
