Nov 16, Colombo: The principal of a school in Millaniya, the Millaniya police inspector and the police sergeant, who were arrested and remanded for allegedly assaulting a group of fifth grade students, have been released on bail.
Colombo Additional Magistrate Mr. Keminda Perera has ordered that each suspect be released on two personal sureties of Rs.1 million each.
The case has been scheduled to be called again on January 18.
The school authorities and the police officers are alleged of taking the three fifth graders out of the school in a police vehicle and torturing them regarding a stolen purse of a teacher.
The officials of the National Child Protection Authority have stated in court that parents of some of the children who were abused by the principal are reluctant to present their children to a judicial medical officer.
Another teacher of the school and the driver of the Millaniya Police, who were arrested in connection with the incident, had earlier been released on bail.
