Sun, Nov 6, 2022, 10:42 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 06, Colombo: Eight Sri Lankan crew members of the oil supertanker Heroic Idun detained by Equatorial Guinea at its Luba Port request the Sri Lankan authorities to get them released.

Equatorial Guinea detained the very large crude carrier (VLCC) capable of carrying 2 million barrels on a request by the Nigerian Navy on August 13 after it attempted to load oil at the Akpo SBM in Nigeria on Aug. 8 without proper paperwork, according to both countries.

There are 08 Sri Lankans among the crew of the tanker and it is currently detained in Luba port since the crew and the ship were taken into custody by the Equatorial Guinea Navy on 14 August.

The Nigerian navy has said that the Heroic Idun was attempting to load oil at the Akpo SBM on Aug. 8 without due clearance from state oil company NNPC, and that it "resisted arrest" when ordered to stop.

According to the Nigerian Navy the captain of the Heroic Idun refused to co-operate, filed "a false piracy report" and then sailed at full speed for nearby Sao Tome and Principe.

When the ship was chased down into the waters of Equatorial Guinea, its Navy intercepted and arrested the vessel contending that it illegally entered its water without permission as it sought to evade the Nigerian forces.

The entire crew of this ship consists of 26 people, including 08 Sri Lankans, 16 Indians, 01 Polish and 01 Filipino. The ship is on its way back to Nigeria for further investigations, according to the Nigerian Navy.
