* Opposition political parties reach consensus to form an all-party government

July 06, Colombo: Many opposition political parties met yesterday at the Parliament Complex to discuss the preparation of a program related to the formation of an all-party government.

It is reported that 39 representatives of political parties were invited to the discussion chaired by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and former president Maithripala Sirisena and 37 people were present. National People’s Power (NPP) led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake has not participated.

Several members of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna as well as several independent members from that party have been present.

MPs Athuraliye Rathana Thero, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Lakshman Kiriella, Rauf Hakeem, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Patali Champika Ranawaka, MA Sumanthiran, Udaya Gammanpila, Jeevan Thondaman, Mohammad Muzammil, Gevindu Kumaratunga, Duminda Dissanayake, Dayasiri Jayasekara, ALM Athaullah, Anura Priyadarshana. Yapa, Prof. Charitha Herath, Premnath Dolawatte, Chandima Weerakkody, Dilan Perera, Rajitha Senaratne, Thalatha Athukorala, Prof. Tissa Vitharana have also participated in it.

The program to be implemented in the future in the five sectors of education, health, energy, transport and agriculture has been discussed there.

According to political sources, the parties have reached a basic agreement between them to form a national government as soon as possible.

It has also been proposed to work under the all-party government for a year or one and a half years and then go for an election.

The representatives who joined the discussion are of the opinion that it will be possible to get the support of a group of 120 to 140 MPs to form such an all-party government.

It is reported that the discussions focused on the speedy establishment of an all-party government, as well as the adoption of the twenty-first amendment.
