* The biggest obstacle to recover the country is the Rajapaksa family - Cardinal
Tue, Jul 5, 2022, 10:10 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 05, Colombo: The Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith says the biggest obstacle to freeing the country from the current unfortunate situation is the continuation of the Rajapaksa family in power.

The Archbishop as the President and the government have no moral right to remain in power under the current situation, they should accept the responsibility for the tragic situation in the country, resign from their positions and hand over the future of the country to the people.

After that, an interim all-party government can be formed to bring about the structural political change that the people are looking for, the Archbishop said adding that the new government should get expert advice through a technical and scholarly committee to resolve the country's problems quickly.

The Archbishop said that a general election should be held as soon as the situation in the country improved and that he would request all the political leaders of the opposition to take the lead in rescuing the country from this situation.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, made these remarks while addressing a press conference held today (5) at the Archbishop's residence.

Cardinal Ranjith also said that it should be accepted that the short-sighted and arbitrary decisions taken by the President and the government in the last 2 1/2 years are directly responsible for the acute crisis situation at present.

The archbishop said although he remained silent for a while, giving in to the expectations that arose in the people with the appointment of the new prime minister, he can no longer remain silent as a religious leader and a responsible citizen in view of the current situation.
