* Gunman in Bastian Mawatha double murders killed in shootout with police

July 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police said an underworld member, who is said to be the shooter in the recent double murders in Bastion Mawatha, Colombo was shot dead in Gampaha Bemmulla area during a shootout with the police.

The suspect was killed during a shootout with police officers at around 4.00 this morning (04) at Bemmulla, Gampaha.

According to the information received by the Colombo Crime Division that the deceased shooter is in the Gampaha area, the police have conducted a search operation early this morning and the police found the suspect while traveling on a motorbike.

The suspect had then shot at the police van with a T56 firearm hidden in his possession and the police have returned the fire seriously injuring the shooter.

The police said the suspect died after being admitted to the Gampaha hospital with serious injuries and the van in which the officers of the Colombo Crime Division were traveling was damaged due to the shooting by the suspect.

The deceased, identified as 41-year-old Ihala Withanage Joseph Kumara, a resident of Elpitiya area, was believed to be the main suspect in the fatal shooting of two youth near the Bastian Mawatha bus stand in Pettah on May 30.
