* Amount of hidden fuel found exceeds 100,000 liters

July 04, Colombo: island wide, 103,095 liters of fuel hidden by various individuals have so far been found, the Police said.

Among the hoarded stocks are 27,152 liters of petrol, 62,723 liters of diesel and 13,220 liters of kerosene.

According to police, so far 954 raids have been carried out and 885 suspects have been arrested.

According to a senior official of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, although there has been a fuel crisis in the country, there is still about a month’s worth of fuel in the country.

The reason for this is that many consumers are stockpiling fuel for their future consumption, the senior spokesperson further stated.

Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said the main reason for the crises related to filling stations was the unnecessary hoarding of fuel.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man who was illegally in possession of 6600 liters of fuel has been arrested in Kilinochchi, Karadibokka area, Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Talduwa said.

Another suspect has been arrested with 100 liters of petrol and 400 liters of diesel without a license in Kilinochchi.

Police said the 62-year-old resident of Kulawali, will be produced before the Kilinochchi Magistrate’s Court today.
