* Agriculture Minister instructs to buy seed paddy from farmers at Rs. 150 per kilo
Sun, Jul 3, 2022, 09:35 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 03, Colombo: Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Department of Agriculture to buy seed paddy grown in the Yala season at 150 rupees per kilogram.

The Minister said the current price set by the Department of Agriculture for a kilo of seed paddy is 140 rupees, but it is not a fair price from the farmers' side, so that arrangements should be made to buy seed paddy at Rs. 150 per kilo.

The Minister further instructed officials to prepare a Cabinet Paper in order to get the approval of the Cabinet for increased price.

The Ministry of Agriculture says that the amount of seed paddy required for the 2022/2023 season is 4 million bushels and the amount of seed paddy obtained from the government farms is between 10-12 percent of the total requirement and the remaining seed paddy is obtained from the farmers.

The Minister of Agriculture said that information has been received that some farmers who cultivated seed paddy are selling their harvest to traders at a higher price for processing rice.

The Minister while requesting the farmers not to sell seed paddy for processing rice as there is a possibility of shortage of seed paddy for the next season, said he has instructed the Department of Agriculture to immediately intervene to buy the seed paddy owned by the farmers.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said that the Paddy Marketing Board is working to purchase more paddy crops of the Yala season and a Cabinet paper has already been prepared to get the approval of the Cabinet for that.
