* Police protection to former CID director Shani Abeysekara

Dec 05, Colombo: The Attorney General informed the Court of Appeal that former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Shani Abeysekara will be given police protection.

Additional Solicitor General Rohanta Abeysuriya informed the court when a petition filed by Mr. Shani Abeysekara requesting the court to issue an order to take steps to ensure his safety, was called today (05)

The Additional Solicitor General mentioned that two armed police officers are being provided for the protection of petitioner Mr. Shani Abeysekara. In addition, he informed that one officer will be provided for the security of the house.

Also, if the petitioner Mr. Shani Abeysekara wishes to change his place of residence, he is ready to provide a different place for that, said the Additional Solicitor General who appeared for the respondents.

President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya, who appeared for Mr. Abeysekara, informed the court that his client is satisfied with the notification.

Then it was ordered that the petition be called on 15th of December.

Victims and Witnesses Protection Authority, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, Inspector General of Police and others have been named as respondents in this petition.

The petitioner Mr. Shani Abeysekara claims that he has requested the Victims and Witnesses Protection Authority to provide adequate protection as his life has been threatened.
