* Grama Niladhari officer who threw 8-year-old child into canal arrested

Aug 18, Colombo: A Grama Niladhari officer who allegedly threw an 8-year-old child into a canal has been arrested by the police.

Police say that the Udapola Grama Niladhari officer has been arrested in connection with the incident reported from Udapola in Polgahawela.

The police allege that the suspect picked up the 8-year-old child who was watching an elephant bathing from the canal bank threw into the canal injuring the child.

The police say that the child was admitted to the hospital with broken bones as a result of the suspect’s actions.

According to the complaint made by the child’s parents to the police regarding the incident, the police have arrested the suspect.

The police say the 54-year-old suspect was drunk at the time.
