* Sri Lanka Customs nabs two Sri Lankans attempting to smuggle over Rs. 200 million worth gold at airport

Aug 17, Colombo: Officers of Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Division at Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake Wednesday (17) have arrested two Sri Lankans who attempted to smuggle in 9.5 kilograms of gold worth 205 million rupees.

The Customs officers arrested an airline passenger and an employee of the duty free shopping complex of the airport who tried to leave the Airport with a consignment of 80 gold biscuits each weighing 116.6 grams.

The 39-year-old passenger, a resident of Nittambuwa area arrived at the Katunayake Airport from Dubai at 08.35 this morning on Emirates Airlines flight EK-650.

The other person who was arrested is a 38-year-old woman from Seeduwa who was working at the duty-free shopping mall at Katunayake Airport.

It is reported that the passenger had brought the gold biscuits from Dubai and given half of the stock to the woman employee at a duty-free shop. Together they have attempted to leave the airport with the gold biscuits hidden in his luggage and the woman’s handbag.

At present, the duo have been detained and the airport Customs officials are conducting further investigations on this matter.
