* Police identify 32 people who vandalized the President’s House

Aug 16, Colombo: The Colombo Central Division Crimes Investigation Unit, which is investigating the breaking into the President’s House and damaging its properties, has identified 32 protesters with their names as of yesterday (15).

A senior police officer said that investigations are currently underway to arrest the 32 suspects and they are changing their residences to evade the arrests. The official said that there are leaders of the Aragalaya (struggle) among them.

According to the Police officer, during the investigations more than 150 people, who forcibly entered the President’s House in Colombo on 09 July and damaged its property, have been identified from the photographs and video footage of the incident and 32 suspects among them have been identified with their names and addresses.

The photographs of 72 persons identified through videos and photographs but still unidentified with names were released to the media on two occasions with 32 and 40 photos separately by the police headquarters.

The police say they are receiving good responses to the photos from the public and based on the information received, they were able to arrest two women who were present at the round table where the President holds discussions with the ministers and officials at the President’s House.

As of yesterday, 20 individuals had been arrested on suspicion of breaking into the President’s House illegally and damaging its properties. Among them, the police mentioned that there were several people involved in the theft of property from the mansion.

More photos will be released in the future seeking public assistance to identify the suspects, the police said.
