Thu, Aug 11, 2022, 09:55 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs officials have arrested two Sri Lankan passengers at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake Wednesday (10) while attempting to illegally bring a stock of foreign cigarettes into the country.

The duo had arrived at Katunayake Airport yesterday (10) at around 03.30 in the morning from Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airlines flight EY-264.

Officers of the Narcotics Control Unit of the Sri Lanka Customs had arrested a 45-year-old woman and a man residing in the Grand Pass area of Colombo and seized 50,000 foreign cigarettes.

Customs officers say they have found 250 cartons containing 50,000 Manchester cigarettes hidden in the baggage of the suspects. The seized stock of cigarettes is estimated to worth Rs. 4 million.

Since the importation of these foreign manufactured cigarettes into Sri Lanka is prohibited, Customs officials at the Katunayake airport have taken steps to confiscate the stock of cigarettes.
