* Period to inquire into violent incidents and assess damages due to unrest extended till July 22

Aug 04, Colombo: The duration for the Presidential Commission to inquire into the loss of life and injury to persons, assess damages and destruction to property during the unrest in the country, has been extended till the 22nd of July 2022.

A Presidential Commission of Inquiry was established by the President on 01 June 2022 to investigate and inquire into the loss of life and injury to persons, damage and destruction to property due to vandalism of all forms including arson, and looting and theft that took place during March 31st 2022 and May 15th 2022 in several parts of the country;

The Commission is chaired by Supreme Court Justice, President’s Counsel B. P. Aluvihare and former Senior DIG S.M. Wickramasinghe and Additional Chief Valuer N.A.S Wasantha Kumara are the other members of the Commission.

In an extraordinary gazette notification issued by the President Ranil Wickremesinghe Wednesday (August 03), it has been stated that although the period to be considered to obtain information, and to investigate and inquire into the relevant matters by the Commission of Inquiry is to be from 31st March 2022 to 15th May, 2022, it has been reported to the President that loss of life and injury to persons, damage and destruction to property due to vandalism of all forms including arson, and looting and theft had taken place from time to time until 22nd July, 2022.

Therefore the President has directed that the period to be considered to obtain information, and to investigate and inquire into the relevant matters by the Commission of Inquiry should be amended as 31st March, 2022 to 22nd July, 2022.
