Aug 03, Colombo: The Attorney General informed the Colombo High Court today that further investigations will be conducted into the burning of the MV X-Press Pearl container ship.

The case related to this incident was called before Colombo High Court Judge Damith Thotawatta today. The State counsel who represented the Attorney General informed the court that further investigations related to this incident will be conducted.

The State counsel also asked the court to give a date to report its progress of the investigation. Accepting the request, the High Court judge ordered the relevant complaint to be called on September 21 and informed the State counsel to report the progress of the investigations that day.

When this case was called today, the suspects Vitaly Tyutkalo, Russian captain of the container carrier MV X-Press Pearl, and the directors of the ship’s local representative company appeared in court.

The Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl container ship carrying a hazardous chemical cargo caught fire on 20 May 2021 while at anchorage 9.5 nm off Colombo Harbor due to a chemical leak in a container and burned for 13 days before the fire was put out on 2nd June.
