Aug 02, Colombo: Anuradhapura Additional Magistrate Mrs. Rudrika De Silva Hewawasam and Kahatagasdigilia Magistrate Mr. Wimal Weerasinghe have fined eight traders who were found guilty before the court for selling rice at a price higher than the maximum retail price in violation of the Consumer Act.
Among the eight traders, five were fined 100,000 rupees each, one shop owner was fined 130,000 rupees and another shop owner was fined one 150,000rupees.
M Wickramapala, Manager of Mananadu Grocery and Farm Shop, Anuradhapura New Puttalam Road Second Step, D. G. Vijitha, the manager of Hemamali Traders at 63B Jayanthi Mawatha, Anuradhapura, S Sugathapala, Manager of Laksara Stores, 154 Airport Road, Anuradhapura, G. W. P. P. Samanmalee, Manager Induwara Stores in front of Saliyapura Railway Station, J. Jayasena, Manager of Raja Stores, Parasangaswewa, Ratmale Junction, S E Lalana Charinda Kumara, Manager of Anuradhapura Tihiyagama Handiya Food Market, P Upali Piyaratne, manager of Rasidu Super at Yakalla Megodawewa Kapuwatta, and Sadas Mohammad Siras, manager of Testco Lanka Rice Mills, Srawasthipura have been fined.
Chief Senior Investigating Officer BACP Perera and Investigating Officer Saman Abeysanha of the Anuradhapura District Office of the Consumer Affairs Authority presented the suspected traders to the Anuradhapura Additional Magistrate’s Court and the Kahatagasdigilia Magistrate’s Court.
Consumer Affairs Authority orders that no Manufacturer, Producer, Supplier, Distributor or Trader shall Sell, Supply, Expose or Offer for sale, Display for sale the listed variety of rice, exceeding the Maximum Retail Price, which is set at 210 rupees per kilo.
