May 28, Colombo: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today assured that the government will extend its fullest support for the Central Bank to carry out its functions independently.
The President made this observation at a meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and Member of the Monetary Board Sanjeewa Jayawardena at the President’s House, Colombo this morning (28), President’s Media Division (PMD) said in a statement.
The President commended the actions taken by Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe to control and alleviate the financial crisis within a short period of time.
Dr. Weerasinghe said that the program, which is being carried out in consultation with financial institutions including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, with the contribution of experts in the field of economics, has made successful progress.
The President said that the government would support the process to continue without any political interference.
The Governor of the Central Bank expressed the hope that the ongoing operations would be able to achieve social and economic stability.
The President stated that he was ready to in his capacity as the Head of State whenever necessary for the success of the program that is being carried out internationally by the Central Bank Governor and the Monetary Board.
