May 27, Colombo: Police have arrested two persons for allegedly assaulting MP Kumara Welgama and his driver.
Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said two suspects were arrested in the Kottawa area by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the attack on Welgama and his driver on May 09.
A group of people has stopped MP Kumara Welgama’s vehicle at the Kottawa entrance of the Southern Expressway on the evening of the 9th May and assaulted the MP, his driver and a Police Sargent. All three victims were admitted to the hospital after being seriously injured by the attackers.
The two suspects have been arrested according to the investigation conducted so far into the incident and further investigations are being carried out using CCTV footage, the police said.
The suspects arrested have been identified as 37-year-old restaurant owner and a resident in Makumbura and a 30-year-old assistant health worker in Horana.
The suspects are to be produced in court, police said.
