May 27, Colombo: Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, filed an appeal through her lawyers before Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekanawala Friday against her two-year jail sentence.
After considering the request, the Magistrate adjourned the case till the 30th of this month to ascertain the facts.
Shashi Weerawansa was sentenced to two years in prison by Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala today (27) after she was found guilty of fraudulently obtaining a diplomatic passport by submitting falsified documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
President's Counsel Shavendra Fernando, who appeared for the accused Shashi Weerawansa, requested that his client be remanded in custody pending an appeal. Accordingly, the court allowed the request.
Following the completion of the court proceedings, the defendant Shashi Weerawansa was taken to the Colombo Remand Prison by a prison bus from the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court at around 5.00 pm today (27).
