May 27, Colombo: The Government of France has donated a stock of medicine worth 300,000 Euros (around Rs 115 Million) following the request of the Sri Lankan government.

French Ambassador to Sri Lanka Eric Lavertu handed over the stock of medicines to the Minister of Health and Water Supply Keheliya Rambukwella at the Ministry of Health yesterday (26).

This donation of anesthetic and respiratory medicines is an emergency response to the urgent needs of the country, the French Embassy in Colombo said.

The French Ambassador said that he was pleased to be able to provide such assistance in view of the current situation in Sri Lanka and hopes to continue to support such donations as well as relief efforts.

France expressed its goodwill to assist Sri Lanka at this moment as the country’s health service is in a serious crisis with shortages of drugs and essential items amid the worsening economic situation.

Minister Rambukwella stated that all necessary steps will be taken to maintain the normal functioning of the health service in the country and that if needed, alternative measures will be taken to that end.

The Minister said that necessary steps are being taken to overcome the current economic and financial crisis and that steps are being taken to ensure that the supply sector is not disrupted.

Discussions took place between the Minister and the Ambassador, especially on the political stability of the country as well as food security and steps to be taken for development activities as the country returns to normalcy. Secretary to the Ministry of Health SJS Mr. Chandragupta and several others were present at the occasion.
