* SLPP Local Councilor remanded for assaulting woman, threatening Police OIC

May 26, Colombo: A Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Pradeshiya Sabha member who threatened a woman and the OIC of the Attanagalla Police Station has been remanded.

Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha MP Chaminda Hettiarachchi was arrested for entering a house in the Urapola area in Attanagalla and assaulting and threatening a woman, damaging property and threatening police officers.

The local councilor was produced before the Attanagalla Magistrate's Court and remanded till June 07. He had also verbally abused the woman and the police officers inside the police station.

The SLPP politician’s mother had lodged a complaint with the police alleging that a group had damaged his house during the riots that took place on May 9th.

Accordingly, three suspects were arrested and released on Rs. 200,000 bail each after producing them before the Attanagalla Magistrate's Court.

The PS member angered by their release had gone to the house of a person who had offered bail to a suspectand had scolded him and also damaged property.

When a woman in the house had come to the police station lodge a complaint, the suspect, who was drunk, had assaulted and threatened the woman and the OIC of the police station.

The assaulted woman has been admitted to the Wathupitiwala Base Hospital.
