* Angry mob sets filling station owner’s house on fire after fuel runs out

May 22, Colombo: Ipalogama Police said a group had set fire to the house of the owner of the IOC filling station in the Ranajayapura area in Ipalogama, Kekirawa last night (21).

Police said that a large number of people had come to the filling station yesterday (21) to get petrol and that some people in the queue had not been able to get fuel when the station ran out of fuel.

The police suspect a group enraged after fuel stocks ran out had set fire to the owner’s house.

The suspects had set fire to a two storey house in the Ipalogama Thilakapura area which is said to be belong to the petrol station owner.

It is suspected that two petrol bombs were hurled at the door and the back door of the upstairs porch of the two-storey house and the upstairs was severely damaged due to the fire, police said.

The house had been set on fire during the power cut last night and the wife of the owner of the petrol station and his two children were at home at the time of the fire, police stated.

Upon hearing of the incident, the neighbors and the Ipalogama Police had put out the fire and taken action to save the lives of the residents. The owner’s wife and two children were the only occupants of the house at the time of the attack and no injuries were reported.

The fire caused severe damage to the two-storey house and its property.

A family member said that the school books of the two children who were preparing for the GCE Advanced Level examination had been destroyed by the fire.

The Ipalogama Police are currently conducting investigations to arrest the suspects on the instructions of senior police officers in charge of the Anuradhapura Police Division.
