May 21, Colombo: Senior police officers including Inspector General of Police (IGP) CD Wickramaratne, the Commanding Officer of the Police Special Task Forces (STF) and the DIG of the Special Task Force have been summoned to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to make statements regarding the violent incidents that took place in front of Temple Trees and at the Galle Face on May 9th.
According to a notice issued, the officers appeared before the CID at 2.30 pm Saturday.
After giving a statement for 5 hours, the IGP has left the CID while the Commandant of Police STF, DIG Waruna Jayasundara and the DIG Thilak Chaminda Dhanapala in charge of the Special Bureau of Police also gave statements for about seven hours and left the CID today (May 21).
Meanwhile, police said that 1,348 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the incidents that took place on the 9th. Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that 638 of them have been remanded.
The police said 805 complaints have been received so far regarding various incidents that took place after the attack on the protest sites and 883 persons have been arrested in this regard. Out of them 364 have been granted bail and 412 have been remanded.
