May 17, Colombo: An incident was reported in Parliament today where several ruling party MPs have seized the mobile phones of two Parliamentary journalists and threatened them.
The two journalists, who were engaged in reporting as the ruling party parliamentarians exited the parliamentary group meeting in Parliament today, faced the abuse by several MPs.
The two journalists alleged that MPs D Weerasinghe and Indika Anuruddha had seized their mobile phones. The journalists said that ruling party MP Prof. Channa Jayasumana was also involved in the incident.
The two journalists have lodged a complaint with the Welikada Police regarding the incident.
The Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa also expressed his views in Parliament regarding the incident.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the two journalists covering Parliament have been threatened by several MPs and their phones have been taken away and demanded the parliament to take action to return the phones to the journalists.
The Opposition Leader called on the Speaker as well as the Prime Minister to ensure the freedom of the media and called for action to be taken against those responsible for the harassment of journalists.
It was further reported that the two mobile phones were return to the two journalists with the intervention of the Speaker this afternoon.
