May 14, Colombo: A train carrying fuel from Rambukkana to Peradeniya has derailed in the Rambukkana Kansala area, Railway Department sources said.
This train was transporting 37,400 gallons of petrol and 5,800 gallons of diesel, when it had derailed en route to the Kandy railway station.
Due to the accident the train service between Rambukkana and Kandy has been disrupted and several train services have been canceled.
The derailment has not caused any damage to the train or the fuel transported in it and the Army and the Air Force have provided high security. However, the railway line has been severely damaged and authorities said it is not possible to operate the Rambukkana-Kandy train at the moment.
Employees of the Railway Department have commenced work to get the derailed train on track.
