* Religious leaders bless new Premier

May 12, Colombo: The Chief Prelates of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters have telephoned and blessed the new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero, Maha Nayake of the Malwathu Chapter, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathna Thero, Maha Nayake of the Asgiri Chapter have called the Prime Minister and blessed him.

Bishop Valence Mendis of Kandy Diocese has also spoken to Ranil Wickremesinghe and blessed him.

However, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and Omalpe Sobitha Thero have expressed their opposition to the appointment of Ranil Wickremesinghe to the Prime Minister post.

Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said Mr. Wickremesinghe’s appointment is illegal as he is the only MP representing his party and does not command a majority in Parliament.

Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thera meanwhile said Ranil Wickremesinghe is not the Prime Minister people wanted and the President has no right to go against the will of the people.
