* Ranil Wickremesinghe sworn in as new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

May 12, Colombo: Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

MR. Wickremesinghe took oaths before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the President's House in Colombo this afternoon (12).

Secretary to the President Gamini Senarath and Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe were also present at the occasion.

Ranil Wickremesinghe has previously served five times as the island nation’s Prime Minister.

Wickremesinghe’s appointment as the prime minister for a sixth time comes after former Premier Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from the post on May 09, 2022.

He was first appointed as PM from 1993 – 1994 after the assassination of President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

Subsequently, he served as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 2001 to 2004, 2015 to 2018 October, and 2018 December to 2019 and has served as Leader of the Opposition from 1994 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2015.
