Thu, May 12, 2022, 12:01 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 11, Colombo: Former Minister and Matara District parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma urged the public to remain calm and peaceful and unite against violence and petty objectives without any party divisions.

Following is the statement:

Let us rise from the ashes

Sri Lanka is converting into a lawless state as a result of some elements in the government attempting to suppress a month-long peaceful democratic protest before the Presidential Secretariat through thuggery.

The notorious attack against the civilized protest has already been marked in black in Sri Lankan history.

All politicians and civil society must seek amidst ashes the knowledge that dissent well- founded on democratic principles must be responded to with equally moral fundamentals.

The counter-violence spreading in the country together with vandalism shows the alarming destination the politics is heading. The most dangerous memory of the flow of tragic incidents is the death of genuine peasant MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala.

At this decisive moment, the country is before the harshest economic crisis of history after the independence and people facing stringent conditions, I would like to make an earnest appeal to the citizens who love the country endlessly without the party and other divisions.

At this moment the rule of law, public security and order have deteriorated, let us remain calm, peaceful and non-violent without giving in to sudden anger and violent impulsions.

Mother Sri Lanka has already shed more tears than the volume of the waters of River Mahaweli due to the adverse results of violence leased several times in history by her sons and daughters harming the brethren, dividing into groups with petite objectives.

Above all the justifications related to the series of tragic incidents, we all must understand that this is the moment to unite in the name of humanity.

For the sake of thefuture of the nation and the children who are the heirs of that future, we must overcome our sentiments, make decisions wisely and paddle through this hour of misfortune with determination. Otherwise, a country, future and a generation will not be spared for me, you and us.

We ourselves are the deciders of the history in which our names are carved either in black or gold. Therefore, we must make this an opportunity to show to the international community who are eagerly watching us that we are a resilient civilized nation that can rise in boundless unity defeating this temporary division.

My fellow citizens, let us rise from ashes.

Dullas Alahapperuma,
Member of Parliament — Matara District
