May 09, Colombo: Following the attack on the peaceful protests at Gota Go Gama in Galle Face, and the Maina Go Gama in front of Temple Trees today, riots are being reported in many parts of the country.
It is reported that the buses taking the supporters of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna who arrived at Temple Trees today from various parts of the country in support of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have been attacked while returning home.
It is reported that the houses of several government ministers and parliamentarians are being attacked and set on fire.
Meanwhile, former Minister Johnston Fernando’s office in Wilgoda, Kurunegala and his residence in Mount Lavinia have been attacked and set on fire by protesters.
Meanwhile, the house of Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando who reportedly arranged eight buses to take SLPP supporters to the Temple Trees, was also attacked and set on fire by a group.
Protesters have set fire to MP Arundika Fernando’s house in Kochchikade.
Houses of Puttalam District MP and former State Minister Sanath Nishantha and his brother Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Jagath Samantha, former Minister Ramesh Pathirana, former Minister Johnston Fernando, Prasanna Ranatunga and Gampaha Mayor Eranga Senanayake have been set on fire.
It is also reported that several houses of Ministers and Members of Parliament are being stoned.
Police have fired tear gas to disperse protesters trying to forcibly enter Temple Trees in Colombo a short while ago.
It is reported that a volatile and violet situation is prevailing in the Sri Lankan capital at the moment.
Meanwhile, the Police Headquarters has issued a statement stating that the leave of all police officers has been canceled with immediate effect.
