June 20, Colombo: Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa requested the public not to clash with the police officers demanding fuel as the police and the army have been deployed at filling stations for the safety of the petrol stations and the public.
The Spokesman says there has been an increase in reports of riots and violence at petrol stations by the public and increasing tendency to clash with the police and army personnel who are deployed for security.
“Fuel distribution is not something the police can do. However, some OICs have gone beyond their duty limits and taken steps to bring fuel from the Corporation on behalf of the public and distributing to the people waiting in queues,” SSP Thalduwa said.
He said however, police officers are deployed only for the safety of the petrol station and the public. “Therefore, do not harass, insult, threaten, or assault the security personnel who are deployed to ensure safety. There have even been instances where officers have been injured due to assaults. Police have been advised to be patient as the public is inconvenienced. That is why police officers are always very patient with the public,” said SSP Thalduwa.
Meanwhile, the Police said they will take disciplinary action against any police officer who acts beyond his authority, goes beyond his duties, or uses his uniform unnecessarily for his personal gain.
The police said the officers have been deployed at the petrol stations to provide security to the property as well as to the public and that the police officers could not abuse their power.
