June 19, Colombo: During a foot patrol conducted along the coast of Udappuwa Periyapadu this morning (June 19, 2022), the Sri Lanka Navy seized a stock of 543 kilograms (wet weight) of Kerala cannabis.
In a special foot patrol conducted by SLNS Thambapanni attached to the North Western Naval Command at Udappuwa Periyapadu beach this morning, naval personnel seized 173 parcels containing 543 kilograms (including wet weight) of Kerala cannabis that had been washed ashore.
It is believed that the consignment of Kerala cannabis may have been abandoned at sea by the smugglers and fled as it could not be brought ashore in the face of naval operations.
The stock of Kerala cannabis seized by the Navy is believed to be worth around Rs. 120 million.
The Navy is conducting further search operations in the Periyapadu area off Udappuwa. The seized cannabis stock has been handed over to the Udappuwa Police for further legal action.
