June 18, Colombo: The body of a small child has been found on the Waikkala beach in the Wennappuwa Police Division yesterday (17) evening.

The body was found on a tip off received by the Wennappuwa Police and investigations are underway.

The identity of the deceased child has not yet been ascertained and he was about 5 years old, 4 feet tall, wearing a red T-shirt, plaid shorts and shoes.

Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Nihal Thalduwa stated that an investigation has been launched to ascertain whether the body belonged to the child who was thrown into the Kelani River by his mother near the Kadirana Bridge in the Wattala Police Division on the night of the 15th.

The body is being kept at the Marawila Hospital morgue. The postmortem examination is to be conducted and the Wennappuwa Police are conducting further investigations.

According to the police, the woman had thrown her child into the Kelani River last night (15) and she too had tried to jump into the river.

Residents of the area had stopped the woman from jumping into the river and later handed over to the police officers on duty at the adjacent roadblock.

The 42 year old woman was produced before the Welisara Magistrate’s Court and remanded till the 30th of this month.
