June 15, Colombo: The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (15) ordered the release on bail of three suspects, including Parliamentarian Sanath Nishantha, who were arrested and remanded in connection with the attacks on the protesters at Maina Go Gama near Temple Trees and Gota Go Gama in Galle Face in Colombo on May 09.
However, Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage has ordered that extremist Dan Priyasad be remanded until the 22nd of this month.
The court also directed the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Defense to transfer Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, to take disciplinary action against him and to show cause on the non-implementation of two recommendations made by the Attorney General.
The Attorney General on 16 May 2022 instructed the IGP and the Senior DIG in charge of the CID to immediately arrest and produce in court 22 persons, including former minister Johnston Fernando and DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon, in connection with the attack on the peaceful protesters at Maina Go Gama in front of the Temple Trees and Gota Go Gama in Galle Face green in Colombo on the 9th of May.
The court earlier granted bail to and released 13 suspects including MP Milan Jayatilleke who was arrested along with MP Sanath Nishantha Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando and ultra-Sinhala Nationalist Dan Priyasad.
